David Armour

David Armour was born in Grove City, Pennsylvania, and later attended the University of London and Calvin College. He pursued graduate studies in Colonial American History at Northwestern University and was awarded an M.A. (1960) and a Ph.D. (1965). Dr. Armour first came to the Straits of Mackinac in 1965 to assist in the archaeological excavations at Fort Michilimackinac during summer vacation from his teaching position at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He has recently retired as Deputy Director of the Mackinac Island State Park Commission. Under his direction most of the original buildings at Fort Mackinac were restored; a number of buildings at Colonial Michilimackinac were reconstructed; and the new park Historic Mill Creek, featuring an operating water-powered sawmill, was planned, reconstructed, and opened. Dr. Armour was the editor of the national journal Historical Archaeology for six years and has written numerous books on the island including 100 Years at Mackinac and Colonial Michilimackinac.
